WebServUSB Quick Start

Installation -

Pre-Installation
This section lists the pre-installation requirements for installing WebServUSB.

Hardware Requirements (minimum recommended):
  • USB 1.1 or 2.0 port
  • Pentium PC (133 MHz, minimum)
  • 64 MB RAM
  • TCP/IP networking (either via Ethernet card or dialup adapter)
  • Monitor with a minimum of 640x480 resolution and at least 256 colors

Software Requirements:

  • Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP Home or Pro or NT4 with USB support
  • TCP/IP networking must be installed

Web browsers require a TCP/IP protocol stack to communicate with a Web server, even if the server is on the same machine and there is no intervening network. You must have TCP/IP installed to use WebServUSB.

To install WebServUSB:

1. Plug in the WebServUSB plug into a USB port on your PC. Once the Operating System has recognized it as a disk drive it will assign it a letter. Open the new Drive letter in Windows Explorer and double click on the Install program. It will launch a short program that will ensure WebServUSB starts each time you plug it in.

2. Plug in the WebServUSB into any USB port on your computer. If you have Windows ME, 2000, or XP it will automatically be recognized and installed.

3. Using Windows Explorer, locate WebServUSB in the drive letter list and open it.

WebServUSB should have the following directory structure:

    WebServUSB\(Main install directory)
    \config
    (ini files)
    \docs
    (default virtual root)
    \scripts
(CGI & ISAPI directory - note PERL scripts will go here also)
    \syshelp
    (help files)
    \sysimages
    (system images)
    \mailserv (mailserver program)
    \mailhelp
    (mailserver help files)

4. Locate the WSUSB-Installer.exe file and double click on it.

5. Allow the Installer to complete (takes only 5-10 seconds)

6. Unplug the WebServUSB plug, wait 30 seconds to a minute, then plug it in again

7. AutoRunUSB should then start and automatically launch WebServUSB

Every time you plug in WebServUSB to another computer, run the WSUSB-Installer to allow AutoRunUSB to start the Web Server automatically each time you plug in

Testing WebServUSB

  1. Start WebServUSB by selecting WebServUSB from the Programs menu.
    • You should see a startup screen for WebServUSB appear temporarily, followed by the main screen for WebServUSB.
    • Also you will see a Tray Icon created for WebServUSB in your system tray (next to the time in the task bar).
    • When WebServUSB is minimized, it will only appear as a Tray Icon. Double clicking the icon restores the main window. Right clicking it will bring up a menu for some of the functions.

  2. Start your web browser..

  3. Connect to WebServUSB by typing "localhost" (without the quotes) as your URL.

  4. If you have more than one PC and are using a remote as your server see the author's notes.

Your browser should display the demo page for WebServUSB. Rather than using "localhost" you may use either your machine name, or your IP address.

Starting WebServUSB on boot up
If you want WebServUSB to start each time the machine is started, you can create a shortcut to WebServUSB in the StartUp folder.
